1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "That would be unnecessary. Three thousand will cover the matter. And there is a little reward, I fancy. Have you your check-book?Here is a pen. Better make it out for L4000."
2. "Nothing that would help a thief. Family papers, letters from mypoor wife, diplomas of universities which have done me honour. Here isthe key. You can look for yourself."
3. "Won't it ring?"
4. The appeal was one which could not be ignored. It was impossibleto refuse the request of a fellow-countrywoman dying in a strangeland. Yet I had my scruples about leaving Holmes. It was finallyagreed, however, that he should retain the young Swiss messengerwith him as guide and companion while I returned to Meiringen. Myfriend would stay some little time at the fall, he said, and wouldthen walk slowly over the hill to Rosenlaui, where I was to rejoin himin the evening. As I turned away I saw Holmes, with his back against arock and his arms folded, gazing down at the rush of the waters. Itwas the last that I was ever destined to see of him in this world. When I was near the bottom of the descent I looked back. It wasimpossible, from that position, to see the fall, but I could see thecurving path which winds over the shoulder of the hills and leads toit. Along this a man was, I remember, walking very rapidly.I could see his black figure clearly outlined against the greenbehind him. I noted him, and the energy with which he walked, but hepassed from my mind again as I hurried on upon my errand. It may have been a little over an hour before I reached Meiringen.Old Steiler was standing at the porch of his hotel.
5. "Yes. Tell Shinwell Johnson to get that girl out of the way. Thosebeauties will be after her now. They know, of course, that she waswith me in the case. If they dared to do me in it is not likely theywill neglect her. That is urgent. Do it to-night."
6. "Because I knew it was nowhere else."

1. "We must forgive you your 'even,' Mr. Holmes," said he, "It's asworkmanlike a job as I can remember."
2. But it was only for a moment that we were at fault. At one corner, the corner nearest the room which we had left, there was a seconddoor. Holmes sprang to it and pulled it open. A coat and waistcoatwere lying on the floor, and from a hook behind the door, with his ownbraces round his neck, was hanging the managing director of theFranco-Midland Hardware Company. His knees were drawn up, his headhung at a dreadful angle to his body, and the clatter of his heelsagainst the door made the noise which had broken in upon ourconversation. In an instant I had caught him round the waist andheld him up while Holmes and Pycroft untied the elastic bands whichhad disappeared between the livid creases of skin. Then we carried himinto the other room, where he lay with a clay-coloured face, puffinghis purple lips in and out with every breath-a dreadful wreck of allthat he had been but five minutes before.
3. "Really, sir, you compliment me. Old Baron Dowson said the nightbefore he was hanged that in my case what the law had gained the stagehad lost. And now you give my little impersonations your kindlypraise?"
5. As he spoke he drew the dog-whip swiftly from the dead man's lap,and throwing the noose round the reptile's neck he drew it from itshorrid perch and, carrying it at arm's length, threw it into theiron safe, which he closed upon it.
6. "I'd be very glad if you could tell me where that lady may be,"Peters answered coolly. "I've a bill against her for nearly ahundred pounds, and nothing to show for it but a couple of trumperypendants that the dealer would hardly look at. She attached herself toMrs. Peters and me at Baden- it is a fact that I was using anothername at the time- and she stuck on to us until we came to London. Ipaid her bill and her ticket. Once in London, she gave us the slip, and, as I say, left these out-of-date jewels to pay her bills. Youfind her, Mr. Holmes, and I'm your debtor."

1. "Why, it is after nine now," answered. "I should not be surprised ifthat were he. I thought I heard a ring."
2. "We have had no details yet," observed Holmes. "I perceive thatyou are not yourself a member of the family."
3. "You are not very vulnerable from above," Holmes remarked ashe held up the lantern and gazed about him.
4. All day I turned these facts over in my mind, endeavouring to hitupon some theory which could reconcile them all, and to find that lineof least resistance which my poor friend had declared to be thestarting-point of every investigation. I confess that I made littleprogress. In the evening I strolled across the Park, and foundmyself about six o'clock at the Oxford Street end of Park Lane. Agroup of loafers upon the pavements, all staring up at a particularwindow, directed me to the house which I had come to see. A tall, thinman with coloured glasses, whom I strongly suspected of being aplain-clothes detective, was pointing out some theory of his own, while the others crowded round to listen to what he said. I got asnear him as I could, but his observations seemed to me to be absurd,so I withdrew again in some disgust. As I did so I struck against anelderly, deformed man, who had been behind me, and I knocked downseveral books which he was carrying. I remember that as I pickedthem up, I observed the title of one of them, The Origin of TreeWorship, and it struck me that the fellow must be some poorbibliophile, who, either as a trade or as a hobby, was a collectorof obscure volumes. I endeavoured to apologize for the accident, butit was evident that these books which I had so unfortunatelymaltreated were very precious objects in the eyes of their owner. Witha snarl of contempt he turned upon his heel, and I saw his curved backand white side-whiskers disappear among the throng.
5. "So it appears."
6. I could see from Holmes's rigid face that he was vibrating withinward excitement.

1. "'Oh, I am so frightened!' I panted.
2. "'Milano.' 'Lucerne.' These are from Italy."
3. "My dear sir, there is no need. It is all in the way of professionalexperience."
4、 "'Well, well, some concession might be made for your personaleffects. But nothing shall go out of the house unchecked. My client isa very liberal man, but he has his fads and his own way of doingthings. It is everything or nothing with him.'
5、 "Because it was in my mind to put that little test which answered soadmirably. I fear you would not have gone so far."
