1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 In this memorable year '95, a curious and incongruous successionof cases had engaged his attention, ranging from his famousinvestigation of the sudden death of Cardinal Tosca- an inquirywhich was carried out by him at the express desire of His Holiness thePope- down to his arrest of Wilson, the notorious canary-trainer,which removed a plague-spot from the East End of London. Close onthe heels of these two famous cases came the tragedy of Woodman's Lee,and the very obscure circumstances which surrounded the death ofCaptain Peter Carey. No record of the doings of Mr. Sherlock Holmeswould be complete which did not include some account of this veryunusual affair.
3. "Well, I have not made such a journey for years."
4. "Anything else?"
5. "Well?" I asked at last.
6. "I think, your Grace, that I could speak more freely in Mr. Wilder'sabsence."

1. "It is I," she said, "the woman whose life you have ruined."Milverton laughed, but fear vibrated in his voice. "You were so veryobstinate," said he. "Why did you drive me to such extremities? Iassure you I wouldn't hurt a fly of my own accord, but every man hashis business, and what was I to do? I put the price well within yourmeans. You would not pay."
2. "'Have you the slate, Harold?' cried the older man, as thisstrange being fell rather than sat down into a chair. 'Are his handsloose? Now, then, give him the pencil. You are to ask the questions,Mr. Melas, and he will write the answers. Ask him first of all whetherhe is prepared to sign the papers?'
4. "I hardly consider that a conclusive proof. Was the remainder of thecoronet at all injured?"
5. "I wish you to understand, in the first place, that I am notemployed by Lord Mount-James, and that my sympathies in this matterare entirely against that nobleman. When a man is lost it is my dutyto ascertain his fate, but having done so the matter ends so far asI am concerned, and so long as there is nothing criminal I am muchmore anxious to hush up private scandals than to give thempublicity. If, as I imagine, there is no breach of the law in thismatter, you can absolutely depend upon my discretion and mycooperation in keeping the facts out of the papers."
6. "You'll never persuade me to believe that."

1. "I fear that you'll have a long wait," Holmes whispered. "We maythank our stars that it is not raining. I don't think we can evenventure to smoke to pass the time. However, it's a two to one chancethat we get something to pay us for our trouble."
2. "How can I send her the child?" he said. "How do I know what strangeimpulse might come upon her? How can I ever forget how she rose frombeside it with its blood upon her lips?" He shuddered at therecollection. "The child is safe with Mrs. Mason, and there he mustremain."
3. "Yes. We had occasion some months ago to strengthen ourresources and borrowed for that purpose 30,000 napoleons from theBank of France. It has become known that we have never hadoccasion to unpack the money, and that it is still lying in ourcellar. The crate upon which I sit contains 2,000 napoleonspacked between layers of lead foil. Our reserve of bullion ismuch larger at present than is usually kept in a single branchoffice, and the directors have had misgivings upon the subject.""Which were very well justified," observed Holmes. "And nowit is time that we arranged our little plans. I expect thatwithin an hour matters will come to a head. In the meantime, Mr.Merryweather, we must put the screen over that dark lantern.""And sit in the dark?"
4. "I have jotted down the more essential ones upon this sheet ofpaper, together with a few addresses which you will find of service. The actual official guardian of the papers is the famous governmentexpert, Sir James Walter, whose decorations and sub-titles fill twolines of a book of reference. He has grown gray in the service, is agentleman, a favoured guest in the most exalted houses, and, aboveall, a man whose patriotism is beyond suspicion. He is one of twowho have a key of the safe. I may add that the papers were undoubtedlyin the office during working hours on Monday, and that Sir Jamesleft for London about three o'clock taking his key with him. He was atthe house of Admiral Sinclair at Barclay Square during the whole ofthe evening when this incident occurred."
5. "Well, now, let us take up line B, which concerns Sir Robert. Heis mad keen upon winning the Derby. He is in the hands of the Jews, and may at any moment be sold up and his racing stables seized byhis creditors. He is a daring and desperate man. He derives his incomefrom his sister. His sister's maid is his willing tool. So far we seemto be on fairly safe ground, do we not?"
6. "I shall just have time to tell you the facts of the case beforewe get to Lee. It seems absurdly simple, and yet somehow, I can getnothing to go upon. There's plenty of thread, no doubt, but I can'tget the end of it into my hand. Now, I'll state the case clearly andconcisely to you, Watson, and maybe you can see a spark where all isdark to me."

1. With a motherly tenderness the gaunt woman put her arm round hermistress and led her from the room.
2. I turned it over in my mind.
3. "'On no conditions?' I asked at the bidding of our tyrant."'Only if I see her married in my presence by a Greek priest whomI know.'
4、 "My request seemed both to puzzle and to irritate my host. His greateyebrows came down over his eyes, and he tapped his fingersimpatiently on the table. He looked up at last with the expressionof one who has seen his adversary make a dangerous move at chess, and has decided how to meet it.
5、 "Every minute she gets stronger," said Holmes, glancing at thegoverness. "But tell me, Baynes. who is this man Henderson?""Henderson," the inspector answered, "is Don Murillo, once calledthe Tiger of San Pedro."

He flicked the horse with his whip, and we dashed away through theendless succession of sombre and deserted streets, which widenedgradually, until we were flying across a broad balustraded bridge, with the murky river flowing sluggishly beneath us. Beyond lay anotherdull wilderness of bricks and mortar, its silence broken only by theheavy, regular footfall of the policeman, or the songs and shouts ofsome belated party of revellers. A dull wrack was drifting slowlyacross the sky, and a star or two twinkled dimly here and therethrough the rifts of the clouds' Holmes drove in silence, with hishead sunk upon his breast, and the air of a man who is lost inthought, while I sat beside him, curious to learn what this newquest might be which seemed to tax his powers so sorely, and yetafraid to break in upon the current of his thoughts. We had drivenseveral miles, and were beginning to get to the fringe of the beltof suburban villas, when he shook himself, shrugged his shoulders, andlit up his pipe with the air of a man who has satisfied himself thathe is acting for the best.

"It was a just Providence that killed him. But, mind you this, that if I had knocked his brains out, as it was in my heart to do,he would have had no more than his due from my hands. If his ownguilty conscience had not struck him down it is likely enough that Imight have had his blood upon my soul. You want me to tell thestory. Well, I don't know why I shouldn't, for there's no cause for meto be ashamed of it.

"'This,' said he, taking a gray roll of paper from his bureau, 'isthe original of that secret treaty between England and Italy of which,I regret to say, some rumours have already got into the publicpress. It is of enormous importance that nothing further should leakout. The French or the Russian embassy would pay an immense sum tolearn the contents of these papers. They should not leave my bureauwere it not that it is absolutely necessary to have them copied. Youhave a desk in your office?'
