1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Good heavens!" I cried. "It is marvellous."
2. The detective's face had grown longer and longer during Holmes'sspeech. His hopes and his ambitions were all crumbling about him.But he would not abandon his position without a struggle."You can't deny that Neligan was present that night, Mr. Holmes. Thebook will prove that. I fancy that I have evidence enough to satisfy ajury, even if you are able to pick a hole in it. Besides, Mr.Holmes, I have laid my hand upon my man. As to this terrible person ofyours, where is he?"
3. How shall I ever forget that dreadful vigil? I could not hear asound, not even the drawing of a breath, and yet I knew that mycompanion sat open-eyed, within a few feet of me, in the same state ofnervous tension in which I was myself. The shutters cut off theleast ray of light and we waited in absolute darkness. From outsidecame the occasional cry of a night-bird, and once at our very window along drawn catlike whine, which told us that the cheetah was indeed atliberty. Far away we could hear the deep tones of the parish clock, which boomed out every quarter of an hour. How long they seemed, thosequarters! Twelve struck, and one and two and three, and still we satwaiting silently for whatever might befall.
4. "No, no, Lady Brackenstall- it is no use. You may have heard ofany little reputation which I possess. I will stake it all on the factthat your story is an absolute fabrication."
5. "Then I will take up no more of your time. I cannot blame you, Mr.Holmes, for having refused to speak more freely, and you on yourside will not, I am sure, think the worse of me because I desire, evenagainst his will, to share my husband's anxieties. Once more I begthat you will say nothing of my visit."
6. "Could it not have been dropped from a bridge?"

1. "Tropical by birth and tropical by nature. A child of the sun and ofpassion. She had loved him as such women can love, but when her ownphysical charms had faded- I am told that they once were great-there was nothing to hold him. We all liked her and felt for her andhated him for the way that he treated her. But he is plausible andcunning. That is all I have to say to you. Don't take him at hisface value. There is more behind. Now I'll go. No, no, don't detainme! He is almost due."
2. There was a sound upon the stairs, and our door was opened toadmit as fine a specimen of manhood as ever passed through it. Hewas a very tall young man, golden-moustached, blue-eyed, with a skinwhich had been burned by tropical suns, and a springy step, whichshowed that the huge frame was as active as it was strong. He closedthe door behind him, and then he stood with clenched hands and heavingbreast, choking down some overmastering emotion.
3. It was the young lady's turn to look surprised. "This is thesecond time that you have alluded to the date, Mr. Holmes," saidBennett. "Is it possible that it has any bearing upon the case?""It is possible- very possible- and yet I have not my fullmaterial at present."
4. "But why should he come."
5. "He was summoned once for a savage assault upon the old vicar, whohad called upon him to remonstrate with him upon his conduct. Inshort, Mr. Holmes, you would go far before you found a moredangerous man than Peter Carey, and I have heard that he bore the samecharacter when he commanded his ship. He was known in the trade asBlack Peter, and the name was given him, not only on account of hisswarthy features and the colour of his huge beard, but for the humourswhich were the terror of all around him. I need not say that he wasloathed and avoided by every one of his neighbours, and that I havenot heard one single word of sorrow about his terrible end."You must have read in the account of the inquest about the man'scabin, Mr. Holmes, but perhaps your friend here has not heard of it.He had built himself a wooden outhouse- he always called it the'cabin'- a few hundred yards from his house, and it was here that heslept every night. It was a little, single-roomed hut, sixteen feet byten. He kept the key in his pocket, made his own bed, cleaned ithimself, and allowed no other foot to cross the threshold. There aresmall windows on each side, which were covered by curtains and neveropened. One of these windows was turned towards the high road, andwhen the light burned in it at night the folk used to point it outto each other and wonder what Black Peter was doing in there. That'sthe window, Mr. Holmes, which gave us one of the few bits ofpositive evidence that came out at the inquest.
6. "In the Italian Quarter?"

1. "But without his collar or tie. I distinctly saw his bare throat.""Had he ever spoken of Swandam Lane?"
2. Merton scratched his short-cropped pate.
3. "Now then, Mr. Cocksure," said the salesman, "I thought that Iwas out of geese, but before I finish you'll find that there isstill one left in my shop. You see this little book?"
4. "I shall be happy to give you any information in my power.""Was it in this room that you gave your instructions as to thecopying of the document?"
5. "But what do they want?"
6. "Very good. jump in, Watson. We must strike while the iron is hot.Simple as the case is, there have been one or two very instructivedetails in connection with it. Just pull up at a telegraph office asyou pass, cabby."

1. She stared at him with an ashen face and gulped twice before shecould speak.
2. "What I say is true," Holmes answered. "The money cannot be found.Surely it is better for you to take the substantial sum which Ioffer than to ruin this woman's career, which can profit you in noway?"
3. "Which means, I suppose, that you are not quite clear about yourcase?"
4、 "I was awakened in the night by the dog barking most furiously. PoorRoy, he is chained now near the stable. I may say that I alwayssleep with my door locked; for, as Jack- as Mr. Bennett- will tellyou, we all have a feeling of impending danger. My room is on thesecond floor. It happened that the blind was up in my window, andthere was bright moonlight outside. As I lay with my eyes fixed uponthe square of light, listening to the frenzied barkings of the dog,I was amazed to see my father's face looking in at me. Mr. Holmes, Inearly died of surprise and horror. There it was pressed against thewindow-pane, and one hand seemed to be raised as if to push up thewindow. If that window had opened, I think I should have gone mad.It was no delusion, Mr. Holmes. Don't deceive yourself by thinking so.I dare say it was twenty seconds or so that I lay paralyzed andwatched the face. Then it vanished, but I could not- I could notspring out of bed and look out after it. I lay cold and shivering tillmorning. At breakfast he was sharp and fierce in manner, and made noallusion to the adventure of the night. Neither did I, but I gave anexcuse for coming to town- and here I am."

"Yes, but she is a good sort, or I am mistaken. She and herbrother are the only children of an iron-master somewhere upNorthumberland way. He got engaged to her when travelling last winter, and she came down to be introduced to his people, with her brotheras escort. Then came the smash, and she stayed on to nurse herlover, while brother Joseph, finding himself pretty snug, stayed on,too. I've been making a few independent inquiries, you see. But to-daymust be a day of inquiries."

"We thought that perhaps you would care to step across, Mr. Holmes.""The fates are against you, Watson," said he, laughing. "We werechatting about the matter when you came in, Inspector. Perhaps you canlet us have a few details." As he leaned back in his chair in thefamiliar attitude I knew that the case was hopeless.
