1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Carrie's eyes flamed with the light of achievement.
2. Carrie recognised the name as standing for one of the newest andmost imposing hostelries. She had heard it spoken of as having asplendid restaurant.
3. Ames was looking away rather abstractedly at the crowd and showedan interesting profile to Carrie. His forehead was high, hisnose rather large and strong, his chin moderately pleasing. Hehad a good, wide, well-shaped mouth, and his dark-brown hair wasparted slightly on one side. He seemed to have the least touchof boyishness to Carrie, and yet he was a man full grown.
4. Drouet heightened her opinion on this and allied subjects in sucha manner as to weaken her power of resisting their influence. Itis so easy to do this when the thing opined is in the line ofwhat we desire. In his hearty way, he insisted upon her goodlooks. He looked at her admiringly, and she took it at its fullvalue. Under the circumstances, she did not need to carryherself as pretty women do. She picked that knowledge up fastenough for herself. Drouet had a habit, characteristic of hiskind, of looking after stylishly dressed or pretty women on thestreet and remarking upon them. He had just enough of thefeminine love of dress to be a good judge--not of intellect, butof clothes. He saw how they set their little feet, how theycarried their chins, with what grace and sinuosity they swungtheir bodies. A dainty, self-conscious swaying of the hips by awoman was to him as alluring as the glint of rare wine to atoper. He would turn and follow the disappearing vision with hiseyes. He would thrill as a child with the unhindered passionthat was in him. He loved the thing that women love inthemselves, grace. At this, their own shrine, he knelt withthem, an ardent devotee.
5. "That's it," she said to herself. "I'm to use my money now."
6. Carrie instantly brightened up, thinking he had meant it as arebuke.

1. A thought will colour a world for us. The flow of Carrie'smeditations had been disturbed, and Hanson had not long goneupstairs before she followed. She had realised with the lapse ofthe quarter hours that Drouet was not coming, and somehow shefelt a little resentful, a little as if she had been forsaken--was not good enough. She went upstairs, where everything wassilent. Minnie was sewing by a lamp at the table. Hanson hadalready turned in for the night. In her weariness anddisappointment Carrie did no more than announce that she wasgoing to bed.
2. "The paper said four men were hurt yesterday."
3. "Do you lose what you put in?"
4. Hurstwood realised that he was seeing something extraordinarilygood. It was heightened for him by the applause of the audienceas the curtain descended and the fact that it was Carrie. Hethought now that she was beautiful. She had done something whichwas above his sphere. He felt a keen delight in realising thatshe was his.
5. Now he looked up in her face, for she was standing a moment, while he sat.
6. In the course of his present stay in Chicago, Drouet paid someslight attention to the secret order to which he belonged.During his last trip he had received a new light on itsimportance.

1. "Well," he said, "I had a great trip."
2. "Did you? Well, I guess. Didn't you hear the applause?"
3. "You don't say so! Well, sir, this is the first I've heard of it.I knew you would, though. I always said you could act--didn'tI?"
4. "Yes, what makes you ask?"
5. "Oh, I can," returned Carrie without thinking.
6. He looked at her, but she paid no attention to him, working ather dishes.

1. She looked in her purse to leave it.
2. Hurstwood did his best to see that Carrie won the money. Herejoiced in her success, kept counting her winnings, and finallygathered and put them in her extended hand. They spread a littlelunch, at which he served the wine, and afterwards he used finetact in going.
3. "It isn't anything very serious," Hurstwood said solemnly. Hewas very much disturbed over his own situation, and now that hehad Carrie with him, he only wanted to get safely out of reach ofthe law. Therefore he was in no mood for anything save suchwords as would further his plans distinctly.
4、 "Yes," she answered.
5、 "All right," said Carrie.
