1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 The second most dangerous man in London.
2. "Whose house is it?"
3. "None at all. I was inclined to think at one time that he knew whohad done it and was screening him or her, but I am convinced nowthat he is as puzzled as everyone else. He is not a veryquick-witted youth, though comely to look at and, I should think, sound at heart."
4. "Sir Robert Norberton's wife, I presume!"
5. "Tuxbury Old Hall is inaccessible- five miles from anywhere. Therewas no trap at the station, so I had to walk, carrying my suitcase, and it was nearly dark before I arrived. It is a great wanderinghouse, standing in a considerable park. I should judge it was of allsorts of ages and styles, starting on a half-timbered Elizabethanfoundation and ending in a Victorian portico. Inside it was allpanelling and tapestry and half-effaced old pictures, a house ofshadows and mystery. There was a butler, old Ralph, who seemed aboutthe same age as the house, and there was his wife, who might have beenolder. She had been Godfrey's nurse, and I had heard him speak ofher as second only to his mother in his affections, so I was drawnto her in spite of her queer appearance. The mother I liked also- agentle little white mouse of a woman. It was only the colonelhimself whom I barred.
6. It was in vain that I asked Holmes to remain for the evening. It wasevident to me that he thought he might bring trouble to the roof hewas under, and that that was the motive which impelled him to go. Witha few hurried words as to our plans for the morrow he rose and cameout with me into the garden, clambering over the wall which leads intoMortimer Street, and immediately whistling for a hansom, in which Iheard him drive away.

1. "How do you know?"
2. "Here is a very fashionable epistle," I remarked as be entered."Your morning letters, if I remember right, were from a fish-mongerand a tide-waiter."
3. Lestrade rose in his triumph and bent his head to look. "Why," heshrieked, "you're looking at the wrong side!"
4. "I hoped you might have something."
5. "Yes."
6. We were ushered into a dim-lit drawing-room, where an instantlater we were joined by a very tall, handsome, light-bearded man offifty, the younger brother of the dead scientist. His wild eyes, stained cheeks, and unkempt hair all spoke of the sudden blow whichhad fallen upon the household. He was hardly articulate as he spoke ofit.

1. "I wonder that my very simple stratagem could deceive so old ashikari," said Holmes. "It must be very familiar to you. Have younot tethered a young kid under a tree, lain above it with yourrifle, and waited for the bait to bring up your tiger? This emptyhouse is my tree, and you are my tiger. You have possibly had otherguns in reserve in case there should be several tigers, or in theunlikely supposition of your own arm failing you. These," he pointedaround, "are my other guns. The parallel is exact."
2. red-moustached Mr. Woodley. He came for a visit of a week, and oh!it seemed three months to me. He was a dreadful person- a bully toeveryone else, but to me something infinitely worse. He made odiouslove to me, boasted of his wealth, said that if I married him Icould have the finest diamonds in London, and finally, when I wouldhave nothing to do with him, he seized me in his arms one day afterdinner- he was hideously strong- and swore that he would not let me gountil I had kissed him. Mr. Carruthers came in and tore him from me,on which he turned upon his own host, knocking him down and cuttinghis face open. That was the end of his visit, as you can imagine.Mr. Carruthers apologized to me next day, and assured me that I shouldnever be exposed to such an insult again. I have not seen Mr.Woodley since.
3. "But he'll let us slip if we only tell him where the swag is.""What! Give it up? Give up a hundred thousand quid?"
4. "Oh, to be sure, I had not told you of my plans. Well, Watson, Ilove to come to close grips with my man. I like to meet him eye to eyeand read for myself the stuff that he is made of. When I had givenJohnson his instructions I took a cab out to Kingston and found theBaron in a most affable mood."
5. We heard the door open, a few hurried words, and then quick stepsupon the linoleum. Our own door flew open, and a lady, clad in somedark-coloured stuff, with a black veil, entered the room."You will excuse my calling so late," she began, and then, suddenly losing her self-control, she ran forward, threw her armsabout my wife's neck, and sobbed upon her shoulder. "Oh, I'm in suchtrouble!" she cried; "I do so want a little help."
6. "We have got to the deductions and the inferences," said Lestrade, winking at me. "I find it hard enough to tackle facts, Holmes, withoutflying away after theories and fancies."

2. "And they were posted to-day at Gravesend. Well, Mrs. St. Clair, theclouds lighten, though I should not venture to say that the dangeris over."
3. "Very fine- very fine indeed!" he said at last. "And you say youhave a set of six to correspond. What puzzles me is that I shouldnot have heard of such magnificent specimens. I only know of one inEngland to match this, and it is certainly not likely to be in themarket. Would it be indiscreet if I were to ask you, Dr. HillBarton, how you obtained this?"
4、 "The man's name was Arthur Cadogan West. He was twenty-seven yearsof age, unmarried, and a clerk at Woolwich Arsenal."
5、 Holmes and I put on our dress-clothes, so that we might appear to betwo theatre-goers homeward bound. In Oxford Street we picked up ahansom and drove to an address in Hampstead. Here we paid off our cab,and with our great coats buttoned up, for it was bitterly cold, andthe wind seemed to blow through us, we walked along the edge of theheath.

      -THE END-

"Good, Simpson!" said Holmes, patting him on the head. "Comealong, Watson. This is the house." He sent in his card with amessage that he had come on important business, and a moment laterwe were face to face with the man whom we had come to see. In spite ofthe warm weather he was crouching over a fire, and the little room waslike an oven. The man sat all twisted and huddled in his chair in away which gave an indescribable impression of deformity, but theface which he turned towards us, though worn and swarthy, must at sometime have been remarkable for its beauty. He looked suspiciously at usnow out of yellow-shot, bilious eyes, and, without speaking or rising,he waved towards two chairs.

       "What would you do, then?"

  • 屈臣氏 08-03

"That is well. To-morrow I shall set to work upon your case.""I shall see you at Horsham, then?"

{ "Yes, one thing which struck me more than anything else. I haddriven to the Blackheath Station and had caught my train there when, just as it was starting, I saw a man dart into the carriage next to myown. You know that I have a quick eye for faces, Holmes. It wasundoubtedly the tall, dark man whom I had addressed in the street. Isaw him once more at London Bridge, and then I lost him in thecrowd. But I am convinced that he was following me."

      Mistress and maid were both staring at Holmes with pale faces andfrightened eyes.}

"Now do you understand? Your wife feared such all attack. She saw itmade and saved the child's life, and yet she shrank from telling youall the truth, for she knew how you loved the boy and feared lest itbreak your heart."

"'My name, dear lad, is not Trevor. I was James Armitage in myyounger days, and you can understand now the shock that it was to me afew weeks ago when your college friend addressed me in words whichseemed to imply that he had surprised my secret. As Armitage it wasthat I entered a London banking-house, and as Armitage I was convictedof breaking my country's laws, and was sentenced to transportation. Donot think very harshly of me, laddie. It was a debt of honour, socalled, which I had to pay, and I used money which was not my own todo it, in the certainty that I could replace it before there couldbe any possibility of its being missed. But the most dreadful ill luckpursued me. The money which I had reckoned upon never came to hand, and a premature examination of accounts exposed my deficit. The casemight have been dealt leniently with, but the laws were more harshlyadministered thirty years ago than now, and on my twenty thirdbirthday I found myself chained as a felon with thirty-seven otherconvicts in the 'tween-decks of the bark Gloria Scott, bound forAustralia.

Holmes waved his hand towards some papers on a chair. "I had no ideathat the case was coming my way or I should have had my extractsready," said he. "The fact is that the problem, though exceedinglysensational, appeared to present no difficulty. The interestingpersonality of the accused does not obscure the clearness of theevidence. That was the view taken by the coroner's jury and also inthe police-court proceedings. It is now referred to the Assizes atWinchester. I fear it is a thankless business. I can discover facts,Watson, but I cannot change them. Unless some entirely new andunexpected ones come to light I do not see what my client can hopefor."

{ "Ah, Watson," said he, "I hoped that I might not be too late tocatch you."
