1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 The machine girls impressed her even less favourably. They seemedsatisfied with their lot, and were in a sense "common." Carriehad more imagination than they. She was not used to slang. Herinstinct in the matter of dress was naturally better. Shedisliked to listen to the girl next to her, who was ratherhardened by experience.
2. All at once he looked up. The room was so still it seemedghostlike. He heard the clock ticking audibly and half suspectedthat he had been dozing. The paper was so straight in his hands, however, and the items he had been reading so directly beforehim, that he rid himself of the doze idea. Still, it seemedpeculiar. When it occurred a second time, however, it did notseem quite so strange.
3. "One thing you want to be careful about, and that is to starteasy. Give one degree time to act before you start another. Theone fault of most men is that they always want to throw her wideopen. That's bad. It's dangerous, too. Wears out the motor. You don't want to do that."
4. This process of THINKING began by a reversion to Carrie and thearrangement by which he was to get her away from Drouet. Howabout that now? His pain at her failure to meet or write himrapidly increased as he devoted himself to this subject. Hedecided to write her care of the West Side Post-office and askfor an explanation, as well as to have her meet him. The thoughtthat this letter would probably not reach her until Monday chafedhim exceedingly. He must get some speedier method--but how?
5. "I need to make a living."
6. Carrie, left alone by Drouet, listened to his retreating steps, scarcely realising what had happened. She knew that he hadstormed out. It was some moments before she questioned whetherhe would return, not now exactly, but ever. She looked aroundher upon the rooms, out of which the evening light was dying, andwondered why she did not feel quite the same towards them. Shewent over to the dresser and struck a match, lighting the gas. Then she went back to the rocker to think.

1. She looked at his hand.
2. "Say, Kitty," called one to a girl who was doing a waltz step ina few feet of space near one of the windows, "are you going tothe ball with me?"
3. Fitting into this came another appeal from Miss Osborne, moreurgent than ever.
4. "All right," he answered, smiling, although he noted mentallythat it would be more agreeable to his finances if she didn't.Nothing was said about it the next day, but the following morninghe asked:
5. "Honest to God, mister, I'm without a place to sleep."
6. "Well, I've tried to get something," he exclaimed. What do youwant me to do?"

1. "Who said I wanted to?" said Carrie, fiercely.
2. "Oh, I can't," she said.
3. "Glad of it," said Hurstwood, his black eyes lit with a warmthwhich half displaced the cold make-believe that usually dwelt inthem. "What are you going to take?" he added, as the barkeeper,in snowy jacket and tie, leaned toward them from behind the bar.
4. At The Fair, See and Company's, and all the great stores it wasmuch the same. It was the dull season, she might come in alittle later, possibly they would like to have her.
5. "All right," he said, "but you'll hear me out, won't you? Afterall you have said about loving me, you might hear me. I don'twant to do you any harm. I'll give you the money to go back withwhen you go. I merely want to tell you, Carrie. You can't stopme from loving you, whatever you may think."
6. "If I were you," he said, "I'd change."

1. "How are we going to pay it?" asked Carrie, astonished by thebill. "I can't do it."
2. "I will," said Hurstwood, standing back, and feeling intenserelief at her going. He was so ashamed that he folded his handsweakly, as he sat in the chair afterwards, and thought.
3. "We must give her a nice little send-off," said the manager."I'll look after the flowers."
4、 "We'll hear, I guess, soon enough," said Shaughnessy.
5、 Hurstwood turned away and set his lips so as best to express andconceal his feelings.
