1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 A half block away, a small girl gazed at him.
2. "If I were you," went on Drouet, ignoring her last remark, "Iwouldn't have anything to do with him. He's a married man, youknow."
3. On Tuesday it was the same way. He did manage to bring himselfinto the mood to go out to Carrie, but when he got in Ogden Placehe thought he saw a man watching him and went away. He did notgo within a block of the house.
4. In this manner the second, third, and fourth months passed.Winter came, and with it a feeling that indoors was best, so thatthe attending of theatres was not much talked of. Hurstwood madegreat efforts to meet all expenditures without a show of feelingone way or the other. He pretended that he was reinvesting hismoney in strengthening the business for greater ends in thefuture. He contented himself with a very moderate allowance ofpersonal apparel, and rarely suggested anything for Carrie. Thusthe first winter passed.
5. Not trained to reason or introspect himself, he could not analysethe change that was taking place in his mind, and hence his body, but he felt the depression of it. Constant comparison betweenhis old state and his new showed a balance for the worse, whichproduced a constant state of gloom or, at least, depression. Now, it has been shown experimentally that a constantly subduedframe of mind produces certain poisons in the blood, calledkatastates, just as virtuous feelings of pleasure and delightproduce helpful chemicals called anastates. The poisonsgenerated by remorse inveigh against the system, and eventuallyproduce marked physical deterioration. To these Hurstwood wassubject.
6. "Oh, very well," said Carrie, lingering in her dressing-room.She was rather dazed by the assault. "How have you been?"

1. "Just think of that!" said Mrs. Hurstwood, "and only four yearsago they had that basement in Madison Street."
2. As yet, Hurstwood had only a thought of pleasure withoutresponsibility. He did not feel that he was doing anything tocomplicate his life. His position was secure, his home-life, ifnot satisfactory, was at least undisturbed, his personal libertyrather untrammelled. Carrie's love represented only so muchadded pleasure. He would enjoy this new gift over and above hisordinary allowance of pleasure. He would be happy with her andhis own affairs would go on as they had, undisturbed.
3. "It Isn't as lively as Chicago," said Hurstwood. "Don't you likeit?"
4. Sitting in the lodging-house room, he came to his last fiftycents. He had saved and counted until his health was affected. His stoutness had gone. With it, even the semblance of a fit inhis clothes. Now he decided he must do something, and, walkingabout, saw another day go by, bringing him down to his lasttwenty cents--not enough to eat for the morrow.
5. When she had closed the hall-door, she paused a moment andwondered what they would think. Some thought of the queerness ofher deed affected her. She went slowly down the stairs. Shelooked back up the lighted step, and then affected to stroll upthe street. When she reached the corner she quickened her pace.
6. She looked as if she thought he had been contracting someneedless expense.

1. "Several of the boys around here have got talent. There's HarryBurbeck, he does a fine black-face turn. Mac Lewis is all rightat heavy dramatics. Did you ever hear him recite 'Over theHills'?"
2. Not all of this was delivered by one man. It came from here andthere, incorporated with much more of the same sort and curses.
3. He placed himself at the head and called out "Forward." Hurstwoodmoved with the line. Across Fifth Avenue, through Madison Squareby the winding paths, east on Twenty-third Street, and down ThirdAvenue wound the long, serpentine company. Midnight pedestriansand loiterers stopped and stared as the company passed. Chattingpolicemen, at various corners, stared indifferently or nodded tothe leader, whom they had seen before. On Third Avenue theymarched, a seemingly weary way, to Eighth Street, where there wasa lodginghouse, closed, apparently, for the night. They wereexpected, however.
4. Hurstwood was an interesting character after his kind. He wasshrewd and clever in many little things, and capable of creatinga good impression. His managerial position was fairly important--a kind of stewardship which was imposing, but lacked financialcontrol. He had risen by perseverance and industry, through longyears of service, from the position of barkeeper in a commonplacesaloon to his present altitude. He had a little office in theplace, set off in polished cherry and grill-work, where he kept,in a roll-top desk, the rather simple accounts of the place--supplies ordered and needed. The chief executive and financialfunctions devolved upon the owners--Messrs. Fitzgerald and Moy--and upon a cashier who looked after the money taken in.
5. "Well, I'm not," said Carrie.
6. Once at home, she changed her clothes and straightened the roomsfor herself. In the matter of the arrangement of the furnitureshe never took the housemaid's opinion. That young womaninvariably put one of the rocking-chairs in the corner, andCarrie as regularly moved it out. To-day she hardly noticed thatit was in the wrong place, so absorbed was she in her ownthoughts. She worked about the room until Drouet put inappearance at five o'clock. The drummer was flushed and excitedand full of determination to know all about her relations withHurstwood. Nevertheless, after going over the subject in hismind the livelong day, he was rather weary of it and wished itover with. He did not foresee serious consequences of any sort, and yet he rather hesitated to begin. Carrie was sitting by thewindow when he came in, rocking and looking out."Well," she said innocently, weary of her own mental discussionand wondering at his haste and ill-concealed excitement, "whatmakes you hurry so?"

1. "Hello," he exclaimed, half to himself, "has Carrie gone?"
2. Chapter II
3. She unloosed her hair after a time, and let it hang in loosebrown waves. Her mind was going over the events of the evening.
4、 Minnie was thinking of the resource which Carrie's board wouldadd. It would pay the rent and would make the subject ofexpenditure a little less difficult to talk about with herhusband. But if Carrie was going to think of running around inthe beginning there would be a hitch somewhere. Unless Carriesubmitted to a solemn round of industry and saw the need of hardwork without longing for play, how was her coming to the city toprofit them? These thoughts were not those of a cold, hardnature at all. They were the serious reflections of a mind whichinvariably adjusted itself, without much complaining, to suchsurroundings as its industry could make for it.
5、 "But you didn't have much to do with him, did you?" went onDrouet, anxious for his own peace of mind to get some directdenial from her.

Drouet jumped from one easy thought to another as he caughtHurstwood's eye. He felt but very little misgiving, until he sawthat Hurstwood was cautiously pretending not to see. Then someof the latter's impression forced itself upon him. He thought ofCarrie and their last meeting. By George, he would have toexplain this to Hurstwood. Such a chance half-hour with an oldfriend must not have anything more attached to it than it reallywarranted.

Money came slowly. In the course of time the crowd thinned outto a meagre handful. Fifth Avenue, save for an occasional cab orfoot passenger, was bare. Broadway was thinly peopled withpedestrians. Only now and then a stranger passing noticed thesmall group, handed out a coin, and went away, unheeding.
