2. "Don't break it, Count! Don't break it!"
3. "They must have done so. I have a confused memory, too, of havingbeen lifted and conveyed somewhere."
4. "Vox populi, vox dei. You are acquitted, Captain Crocker. So long asthe law does not find some other victim you are safe from me. Comeback to this lady in a year, and may her future and yours justify usin the judgment which we have pronounced this night!"
5. Holmes looked at him thoughtfully like a master chess-player whomeditates his crowning move. Then he threw open the table drawer anddrew out a squat notebook.
6. dissecting-rooms are injected with preservative fluid. These ears bearno signs of this. They are fresh, too. They have been cut off with ablunt instrument, which would hardly happen if a student had doneit. Again, carbolic or rectified spirits would be the preservativeswhich would suggest themselves to the medical mind, certainly notrough salt. I repeat that there is no practical joke here, but that weare investigating a serious crime."

1. "The Vicarage.
2. "Yes, gentlemen," said he, "it is the most famous pearl now existingin the world, and it has been my good fortune, by a connected chain ofinductive reasoning, to trace it from the Prince of Colonna'sbedroom at the Dacre Hotel, where it was lost, to the interior ofthis, the last of the six busts of Napoleon which were manufactured byGelder & Co., of Stepney. You will remember, Lestrade, the sensationcaused by the disappearance of this valuable jewel and the vainefforts of the London police to recover it. I was myself consultedupon the case, but I was unable to throw any light upon it.Suspicion fell upon the maid of the Princess, who was an Italian, and it was proved that she had a brother in London, but we failed totrace any connection between them. The maid's name was LucretiaVenucci, and there is no doubt in my mind that this Pietro who wasmurdered two nights ago was the brother. I have been looking up thedates in the old files of the paper, and I find that the disappearanceof pearl was exactly two days before the arrest of Beppo, for somecrime of violence- an event which took place in the factory ofGelder & Co., at the very moment when these busts were being made. Nowyou clearly see the sequence of events, though you see them, ofcourse, in the inverse order to the way in which they presentedthemselves to me. Beppo had the pearl in his possession. He may havestolen it from Pietro, he may have been Pietro's confederate, he mayhave been the go-between of Pietro and his sister. It is of noconsequence to us which is the correct solution.
3. "To whom, and where?"
4. The prisoner turned with the reckless; air of a man who abandonshimself to his destiny. "Be it so," said he. "And pray, what am Icharged with?"
5. At Baden the track was not difficult to follow. Lady Frances hadstayed at the Englischer Hof for a fortnight. While there she had madethe acquaintance of a Dr. Shlessinger and his wife, a missionaryfrom South America. Like most lonely ladies, Lady Frances found hercomfort and occupation in religion. Dr. Shlessinger's remarkablepersonality, his whole-hearted devotion, and the fact that he wasrecovering from a disease contracted in the exercise of hisapostolic duties affected her deeply. She had helped Mrs.Shlessinger in the nursing of the convalescent saint. He spent hisday, as the manager described it to me, upon a lounge-chair on theveranda, with an attendant lady upon either side of him. He waspreparing a map of the Holy Land, with special reference to thekingdom of the Midianites, upon which he was writing a monograph. Finally, having improved much in health, he and his wife hadreturned to London, and Lady Frances had started thither in theircompany. This was just three weeks before, and the manager had heardnothing since. As to the maid, Marie, she had gone off some daysbeforehand in floods of tears, after informing the other maids thatshe was leaving service forever. Dr. Shlessinger had paid the billof the whole party before his departure.

1. "Quite so. Why? When we answer that we have made some progresswith our little problem. Why? There can be only one adequate reason.Someone wanted to learn to imitate your writing and had to procure aspecimen of it first. And now if we pass on to the second point wefind that each throws light upon the other. That point is therequest made by Pinner that you should not resign your place, butshould leave the manager of this important business in the fullexpectation that a Mr. Hall Pycroft, whom he had never seen, was aboutto enter the office upon the Monday morning."
2. "Of caution?"
3. "My defence against what?"
4. "Mr. Holmes!"
5. "I trust that we are not too late," said he. "I think, MissHunter, that we had better go in without you. Now, Watson, put yourshoulder to it, and we shall see whether we cannot make our way in."It was an old rickety door and gave at once before our unitedstrength. Together we rushed into the room. It was empty. There was nofurniture save a little pallet bed, a small table, and a basketfulof linen. The skylight above was open, and the prisoner gone."There has been some villainy here," said Holmes; "this beauty hasguessed Miss Hunter's intentions and has carried his victim off.""But how?"
6. "I was walking on the cliff when I heard his cry. He was at the edgeof the water, reeling about like a drunken man. I ran down, threw someclothes about him, and brought him up. For heaven's sake, Holmes, use all the powers you have and spare no pains to lift the cursefrom this place, for life is becoming unendurable. Can you, with allyour world-wide reputation, do nothing for us?"

1. "'So I know. Let me make the thing clear to you, for my own handis so strong that I can afford to show it. I have been fortunateenough to win the entire affection of this lady. This was given tome in spite of the fact that I told her very clearly of all theunhappy incidents in my past life. I also told her that certain wickedand designing persons- I hope you recognize yourself- would come toher and tell her these things, and I warned her how to treat them. Youhave heard of post-hypnotic suggestion, Mr. Holmes? Well, you will seehow it works, for a man of personality can use hypnotism without anyvulgar passes or tomfoolery. So she is ready for you and, I have nodoubt, would give you an appointment, for she is quite amenable to herfather's will- save only in the one little matter.'
2. "'You have boxed a good deal in your youth.'
3. "Well, gentlemen," he asked, "what can I do for you?"
4、 "No, no; the end is matted. I suppose there could not be twopeople in your rooms, Mrs. Warren?"
5、 "'Trust me, Jack!' she cried. 'Trust me only this once. You willnever have cause to regret it. You know that I would not have a secretfrom you if it were not for your own sake. Our whole lives are atstake in this. If you come home with me all will be well. If you forceyour way into that cottage all is over between us.'

"The case," said Sherlock Holmes as we chatted over our cigarsthat night in our rooms at Baker Street, "is one where, as in theinvestigations which you have chronicled under the names of 'A Studyin Scarlet' and of 'The Sign of Four,' we have been compelled toreason backward from effects to causes. I have written to Lestradeasking him to supply us with the details which are now wanting, andwhich he will only get after he has secured his man. That he may besafely trusted to do, for although he is absolutely devoid ofreason, he is as tenacious as a bulldog when he once understandswhat he has to do, and, indeed, it is just this tenacity which hasbrought him to the top at Scotland Yard."

"`Oh,' said he, `his name was William Morris. He was asolicitor and was using my room as a temporary convenience untilhis new premises were ready. He moved out yesterday.'

    { "Excellent!" I cried.

  • 海圻 08-01

      "I will," said Holmes. "In the first place, your Grace, I am boundto tell you that you have placed yourself in a most serious positionin the eyes of the law. You have condoned a felony, and you have aidedthe escape of a murderer, for I cannot doubt that any money whichwas taken by James Wilder to aid his accomplice in his flight camefrom your Grace's purse."}

"One moment- one moment!" cried a querulous voice, and we lookedup to find a queer little old man, jerking and twitching in thedoorway. He was dressed in rusty black, with a very broad-brimmedtop-hat and a loose white necktie- the whole effect being that of avery rustic parson or of an undertaker's mute. Yet, in spite of hisshabby and even absurd appearance, his voice had a sharp crackle, and his manner a quick intensity which commanded attention."Who are you, sir, and by what right do you touch this gentleman'spapers?" he asked.

  • 马金钟 07-29

    { "Anyone else?"

  • 杨邦乂 07-29

Sherlock Holmes took it up and opened the bureau.
